September is Hunger Action Month, a time to raise awareness about food insecurity and the ways we can support our neighbours. Across Canada, 1 in 4 people experience food insecurity, and 19% of food bank users report employment as their main source of income, reminding us that hunger can affect anyone.
Here in Northumberland, the need continues to be significant. Between April 1 and July 1, 2026, the CHCN Food Cupboard supported 320 unique individuals through 1,394 client interactions and provided 998 homemade meals and soups.
This Hunger Action Month, we encourage our community to learn more about food insecurity, challenge common misconceptions, and consider supporting the CHCN Food Cupboard through donations of food, household essentials, or financial contributions. Every donation helps ensure that individuals and families have access to nutritious food and support when they need it most: Donate to CHCN’s food security initiatives
To highlight how pantry staples can be transformed into healthy, affordable meals, we’ve also included a selection of recipes featuring ingredients commonly found in food cupboards. Together, we can help turn items on a shelf into nourishing meals on the table.
