Harm Reduction Supplies
The Community Health Centres of Northumberland is a safe needle exchange site and partners with the HKPR Public Health Harm Reduction Works (Needle Exchange/Safer Inhalation Program).
Harm reduction is a set of practical strategies that meet people “where they’re at” in an effort to reduce negative consequences of drug and/or alcohol use. Needle exchange sites are one example of harm reduction.
Our site supplies new, sterile equipment including needles, pipes, spoons, ties, filters, swabs, water, and Vitamin C. We also provide a safe environment to exchange used drug equipment (works).
When arriving at the Centre, please inform our front desk you would like to access harm reduction supplies and they will assist you directly or connect you with a staff member to help provide you with supplies.
To reduce the risk of overdose do not use drugs alone, and pick up one of our free naloxone kits at our Centre.
Overdose symptoms include:
- blue lips or nails
- dizziness and confusion
- can’t be woken up
- choking, gurgling or snoring sounds
- slow, weak or no breathing
- drowsiness or difficulty staying awake
If you are using drugs, please do so safely:
- Never use drugs alone. Use with other people, but NOT at the exact same time.
- Start with smaller amounts than usual.
- Have naloxone (NARCAN®) ready – an overdose occurs quickly.
- Call 911 if you suspect the person is overdosing.
- Stay with the person until help arrives.
Naloxone Kits
The Community Health Centres of Northumberland offers Naloxone kits free of charge. Please speak with one of our medical secretaries at the front desk, who will assist you in meeting with a trained staff member to explain the proper use of the kits.
