Suggested Questions for Candidates

  • Ontario health care organizations are facing huge staffing challenges in the months and years ahead, with shortages of doctors, nurses and other essential health care personnel to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population. If your party wins in June, what will you do to address the crisis in health human resources, and will you commit to working to repeal wage freeze legislation for public health care workers?
  • Interprofessional primary health care teams keep people healthy and out of hospital emergency rooms. Community Health Centres, Indigenous Primary Health Care Organizations, Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics and Community Family Health Teams provide community-governed primary health care to the most vulnerable people in our communities. If your party wins the election, will you increase investment in interprofessional primary health care teams
  • Ontario has made moves in recent years to move away from public delivery of essential health care services, such as home care, to private, for-profit business. Ontario has also lowered the amount it spends, per capita, on health for each Ontarian, putting the province far below other provinces in Canada in terms of public health care spending. What is your stance on the privatization of health care programs and services, such as diagnostics, urgent care, and other services, that have traditionally been delivered by public health care? How will your government demonstrate its commitment to a strong, fair and public health care system that can deliver programs and services equitably to all?
  • We are a core part of the primary health care sector, but Community Health Centres, Indigenous Primary Health Care Organizations, Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics and Community Family Health Teams have had their budgets frozen for more than 10 years. Cutting programs and services to marginalized people and laying off essential staff is not what anyone wants, but the bottom line is that budgets have not kept pace with needs or inflation. Will your party commit to a base funding increase immediately in 2022 for community-governed primary health care teams?
  • 1 in every 5 people in Ontario face barriers getting primary health care services. Indigenous people, Black and other racialized people, Francophones, people with disabilities and mental health challenges, people who are 2SLGBTQ+, and people living in rural, northern and remote communities face the biggest barriers to health care. Organizations such as Community Health Centres and Aboriginal Health Access Centres help address these barriers by delivering both primary health care and community development services based on local needs. Will your party commit to expanding the network of community-governed primary health care centres? What is your party’s plan to ensure resources and funding for organizations working towards health equity for the groups mentioned above?
