After a year and a half of careful planning, the Rural Outreach Clinic located at 34 Victoria Street in Colborne launched on April 6, 2021. This clinic is part of OHT-N efforts to bring services to rural community locations in Northumberland to help reduce barriers to care such as access, transportation and outreach challenges. Colborne ROC services are provided through a collaboration of OHT-N partners and Cramahe Township.
Through the efforts of many OHT-Northumberland partners, the following services are currently available (by appointment only) at the Rural Outreach Clinic:
- Primary care with a Nurse Practitioner (for patients who do not currently have a local primary care provider, or those who may need specific temporary support closer to home)
- Adult and youth mental health supports
- Foot care with a Chiropodist
- Diabetes education
- Smoking cessation
- Seniors wellness supports
The overarching goal of the Rural Outreach Clinic and any future clinics of a similar nature is to improve the health outcomes of residents in areas that may face barriers to accessing health care services. Many of the services being offered would previously require a 20 – 30 minute drive by car to reach a provider.
As of the end of December 2021, the clinic has held over 800 appointments in a range of the above mentioned services and feedback collected from clients who have accessed the ROC are reporting that they are very pleased with the services and many have stated that the clinic has helped them to avoid a visit to the Emergency Department.
