The CHCN has an opening for a Summer Program Coordinator.
We are seeking a motivated and creative Summer Program Coordinator to support our summer programs. The Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, facilitating, and evaluating educational outreach programs for children, youth, and seniors. This role ensures the delivery of safe, inclusive, engaging, and health-promoting programs that support diverse and often marginalized populations. The Program Coordinator provides leadership to the Program Assistant, works collaboratively with Community Team staff, and contributes to outreach initiatives that increase awareness of programs and services offered by the organization.
This position offers opportunities to develop skills in health promotion, community engagement, program facilitation, and the creation of marketing materials for summer programs. This job will provide exposure to technology and digital skill development, including opportunities to develop introductory artificial intelligence skills.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
Program Planning & Organization
- Develop, plan, and coordinate outreach programs for children ages 4–12, youth, and seniors.
- Manage program logistics including scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, equipment, and supplies.
- Plan and coordinate children’s summer programming, senior wellness activities, community garden programming, and outdoor physical and educational activities in subsidized housing complexes.
- Incorporate educational themes into programming (e.g., sun safety, helmet safety).
- Create and distribute programming calendars at all outreach locations for residents
Program Facilitation & Delivery
- Facilitate, implement, and evaluate educational and recreational outreach programs for at-risk and diverse populations including individuals from marginalized, isolated populations including seniors, children and youth.
- Lead programming for at-risk and marginalized populations, ensuring spaces are warm, safe, judgment-free, and inclusive.
- Provide direct supervision and ensure safety of all participants during programs.
- Promote positive, healthy social interactions among participants.
- Provide guidance and leadership to the Program Assistant.
Children’s Programming
Plan, organize and facilitate the delivery of:
- Plants to Plates: A hands-on food education program for children pairing garden activities with kitchen skill-building, making connections between how food is grown and how to prepare nutritious, tasty meals
- Home Alone: A free safety and independence program for youth learning to stay home alone responsibly and what to do in case of an emergency.
- Kids Club: A free outdoor program offered at three subsidized housing units, providing games, crafts, activities, and nutritious snacks for children from low-income families.
Seniors’ Programming
Plan, organize and facilitate the delivery of:
- Social Hour – a free program designed to reduce senior isolation including games, crafts, activities, guest speakers and snacks.
- Support chair-based exercise classes by preparing program spaces, taking attendance, and admitting participants to virtual Zoom classes.
- Contribute to the planning and preparation of community events, including a community barbeque
- Assist with the Affordable Community Food Market as needed
Program Operations, Administration & Reporting
- Ensure all programs adhere to health and safety requirements and organizational policies.
- Meet regularly with the supervisor to review program progress, challenges, and goals.
- Create and distribute monthly programming calendars at all outreach locations.
- Supervise children during program activities to ensure safety and positive engagement.
- Support the needs of all children, including those with special needs, through inclusive activity planning and collaboration with parents/guardians.
- Assist with setting up, cleaning, and preparing program spaces for upcoming activities.
- Work collaboratively with the Program Coordinator and Community Staff to address any program, facility, or participant concerns.
- Maintain accurate records including attendance sheets, incident reports, and program notes; notify the Community Health Worker immediately of any concerns.
Community Engagement & Outreach
- Build and strengthen relationships with community members through targeted outreach.
- Promote programs in local schools, community agencies, and outreach sites.
- Increase awareness of community programs and services, representing the organization with professionalism and inclusivity.
- Collaborate with the Community Health Worker, community partners, volunteers, and multidisciplinary team members to ensure program success.
Training, Meetings & Professional Development
- Attend mandatory training sessions, including job-specific safety training, health and safety requirements, and current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Participate in regular debriefing sessions with the Community Health Worker and Program Assistant.
- Attend staff and community team meetings as scheduled.
- Continuously develop skills in health promotion, program planning, facilitation, and evaluation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of the social determinants of health, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Experience working with diverse and marginalized populations, including children, youth, and isolated seniors.
- Demonstrated ability to lead safe, supportive, inclusive programming.
- Strong facilitation, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Excellent organizational skills: able to multi-task, shift priorities, manage time, and meet deadlines.
- Skilled in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and adapting programming to participant needs.
Salary: $19.00 per hour
Contract Duration: 30-35 hours per week, 10-12 weeks
Anticipated start date: June 15, 2026

Experience
Qualifications:
- Must be between the ages of 15-30
- Experience and desire to work with children and youth in a community-based setting.
- Experience in program planning and facilitating community-based programs.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a part of a team and independently.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated proficiency in technology and virtual platforms (i.e. Zoom, Canva, etc) an asset.
- Experience working with seniors an asset.
- Experience working with and supervising staff an asset.
- Garden interest, experience and knowledge an asset.
- Food preparation skills and experience an asset.
- First Aid and CPR certified
- Updated Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector (within the last 6 months)
- Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle – local travel may be required
