Northumberland United Way: 55 Years – A Legacy of Caring

Northumberland United Way has been a beacon of hope and support in our community for over five decades. We honor history while welcoming a fresh new team led by Executive Director Alicia Vandine, poised to carry this torch forward, bringing renewed energy and vision to our mission. In the heart of Northumberland County, we are more than just an organization— we are your neighbours, your friends, and passionate weavers of community fabric. As social connectors and community builders, we are dedicated to uplifting and uniting the diverse threads of our community. Together with our community partners, we are not just dreaming of a brighter tomorrow—we are actively constructing it, strengthening the bonds that make Northumberland County a place where everyone belongs and thrives.

At the core of our approach is Community Matters—a survey that is so much more than a questionnaire. It is our way of opening our hearts to better understand the needs of Northumberland County. This deep listening informs every program we nurture and every partnership we forge, ensuring our efforts truly reflect the soul of our community.

Picture a child’s face lighting up as they unzip a new backpack, filled with the promise of learning and growth. Our Backpacks for Kids program is more than just school supplies—it’s a message to every child that they matter, that their potential is limitless, and that their community stands behind them.

In these challenging times, we recognize that access to nourishing food and essential hygiene products are fundamental rights, not privileges. Our Northumberland Eats program, which began as a food voucher initiative, is evolving into an even more impactful solution to counter the food crisis in our community. While the details are still unfolding, we are collaborating closely with local businesses to create innovative approaches. Simultaneously, our Period Promise initiative ensures that women and girls in our community can face each day with dignity and confidence.

At Northumberland United Way, we don’t just see statistics—we see stories. Stories of struggle, of triumph, of everyday heroes making a difference. We are here to amplify these stories, to weave them into the human fabric of community care that wraps around every person in Northumberland.

As you read this, know that you’re part of this story too. Your compassion, your generosity, your simple act of caring—it all ripples outward, creating waves of positive change. What’s more, donations to United Way have a remarkable multiplier effect. Thanks to our partnerships with community organizations, every dollar you donate has the potential to impact the community eight times over, magnifying the power of your generosity. We are not just building programs; we are cultivating a community where empathy flourishes, where every hand is ready to lift another, and where hope is as abundant as the air we breathe.
